Alkalinity is the characteristic of soils with a pH level that is greater than 7, which is suitable for plants that thrive in a "sweet" (alkaline) soil, as opposed to a "sour" or acid soil. If soil pH needs to be raised (i.e., the soil isn't alkaline enough), apply lime.
